About RSS Feeds
RSS feeds provide a way for people to be notified when new content is published on web sites they are interested in. Many websites that are frequently updated display links to the RSS feeds that they provide, which can be entered into aggregator applications such as Desktop Ticker. The aggregator will display the contents of the RSS feed, and will periodically check for updates so the user can see summaries of the new content without having to visit the site.

Websites often display an orange icon to show when feeds are available such as , or . To view the feed, click the icon or associated link.
Modern web browsers will also try to detect when an RSS feed is available and show an icon if one is found, for example Internet Explorer is shown to the right. To view the feed, click the icon. The icon may appear green if the page has a web slice, in this case click the arrow next to the icon.

Desktop Ticker can be set to maintain its own list of RSS feeds, or can synchronize with the Windows Common Feed List which can be accessed by other applications.
If set to synchronize with the Common Feed List, you can simply click the "Subscribe to this feed" link on the feed page in Internet Explorer and the feed will then appear in Desktop Ticker and other applications that use the Common Feed List such as Windows Live Mail and Outlook.

Alternatively the RSS feed address can be copied from the web browser address bar and added directly to the Desktop Ticker list by selecting "Manage Feeds" from the File menu and pasting the address into the URL box, then clicking Add.
|
Some web feeds such as Google Mail require authentication details, and Desktop Ticker will ask for these details when such a feed is added. For security reasons the details are not stored when the application is closed, so you will need to re-enter the details each time Desktop Ticker is started.
For example, to add the Google Mail feed, add the address https://mail.google.com/mail/feed/atom to the list on the "Manage Feeds" form. Click OK and enter your Google email address and password.
