Tron User Guide
Tron is a free game for two to four players. Each player controls a bicycle leaving behind it a trail of light, which acts like a wall. The goal is to try to force other players to crash into a trail whilst avoiding them yourself, becoming the last surviving player.
The bicycle is controlled using four keys, one each for up, down, left and right. The keys used are chosen when the player joins the game.
Two players can play on one computer, and two more players can connect over a network.
Playing a game
Double click the Tron icon to launch the application. When asked to connect to a remote player, click No. You can then enter a name and choose the control keys (up, down, left, right) for Player 1. The scoreboard will then appear. Tick the checkbox labelled "2 local players". You can then enter a name and choose the control keys for Player 2. Once this is done, click Start to begin a game.
One player should launch the application and select No to connecting to a remote player. If two players are to use that computer then you can tick the "2 local players" checkbox. Other players should then launch the application on their computers. When asked to connect to a remote player, click Yes. You will then be asked to enter the address of the remote player, which is displayed on the bottom left of the window of the player who first launched the game. Up to three players can connect in this way. The game will begin when all players have clicked the Start button.
Game Options
The following options can be specified whilst a game is not in progress.
You are asked to select your keys when the application starts. If you are unhappy with the keys you chose, you can select the "Change Keys" option from the Game menu to redefine them.
There are three game speeds available which can be selected on the Game menu: Slow, Normal and Fast. When playing over a network, player one is in control of the game speed. Note that the game speed may be affected by network performance.
The size of the game area can be magnified using the options on the View menu. The screen resolution must be high enough to allow the whole window to fit on the screen.
The background pattern of the game area can be turned on or off using the View menu.
The opacity of the Tron window can be adjusted using the View menu. The lower the value, the more transparent the window is. This can be changed during a game by pressing Control and P.
Network Troubleshooting
Tron uses TCP/IP connections between the different players to communicate. Below are some tips to solve some common problems.
Windows blocks unknown applications from accepting connections as a security precaution. You can unblock Tron by going to the Control Panel and opening the "Windows Firewall" applet. On the Exceptions page, click "Add Program...". Click Browse then select the Tron.exe file, which by default is located in
C:\Program Files\Tron
Each TCP/IP application needs a unique port number. If this error occurs then you need to specify another port number. To do this locate the Tron.ini file which is located in your profile area. On Windows XP this is usually
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Tron
Open this file using Notepad and change the PortNumber value. All players need to have the same port number specified.
